2024 elections: X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, is hiring for its safety and choices brigades ahead of the 2024 US presidential election and will again allow political advertisements for the first time since 2019.
“ We ’re presently expanding our safety and choices brigades to concentrate on combating manipulation, surfacing fake accounts and nearly covering the platform for arising pitfalls, ” the company said in a blog post Tuesday, in which it also laid out its approach to political converse and precluding namer manipulation as crusade season ramps up.
The advertisement comes after months of changes to the platform and how it handles happy temperance after Elon Musk took over the company last fall. Shortly after his preemption, Musk laid off huge swaths of the company’s staff, including numerous workers responsible for safety, platform manipulation and election policy.( Musk latterly boasted about having cut roughly 80 of the company’s staff.)
It also follows review by Musk about how the platform’s former leadership handled political converse, including claims of suppression.
According to X’s Tuesday blog post, the platform will continue to apply its communal integrity policy — which prohibits the use of the platform for “ manipulating or snooping in choices, ” including posting content that could mislead people about how, when or where to share in communal processes similar as advancing for a “ limited period of time ahead and during an election. ”
“ We ’re streamlining this policy to make sure we strike the right balance between diving the most dangerous types of content — those that could blackjack or deceive people into surrendering their right to share in a communal process — and not laundering political debate, ” X said. The platform will add public markers to posts that violate the communal integrity policy and let druggies know when reach has been confined on similar content.
The practices laid out in X’s Tuesday post aren’t all that different from how the platform handled misinformation related to choices under its former leadership. Ahead of the 2022 researches, the platform said it would label and degrade, for illustration, false claims about how to cast a ballot or the issues of a race.
X added that it’s following through on a commitment to allow expanded political advertising. The company began taking way in that direction in January, when it relaxed a ban on issue advertising and promised that farther changes to political advertisements would be coming. Twitter originally enforced restrictions on political and issue advertising in 2019 amid enterprises that politicians could seek to target druggies with false or deceiving information.
On Tuesday, X said promoted political posts would again be allowed and that the advertisements would be subject to certain programs.
“ This will include proscribing the creation of false or deceiving content, ” X said in the blog post, “ including false or deceiving information intended to undermine public confidence in an election, while seeking to save free and open political converse. ”
The blog post added that X will produce a “ global advertising translucency center ” that will allow druggies to review political advertisements — a capability that’s needed under Europe’s new Digital Services Act, a law that X and other veritably large tech platforms were anticipated to misbehave with as of last week.
