ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review: There is a lot of excitement around AMD’s 4000-series processor and the Asus TUF Gaming A15 is the first gaming laptop to land in India with it. Our review finds the processor to be a beast of an artist, improving performance across a host of metrics, but by over 100%. Our gameplay testing found the laptop to deliver very good frame rates and our Lightroom render times have been reduced by half compared to everything we tested in the mid-range gaming segment.

The keyboard and trackup on this machine are good and the port selection is fairly generous, as is the heavy volume on their left. Asus has used a generous amount of copper throughout the insides to keep the temperature well under control. Lastly, the gaming A15 is also as advanced as the user in terms of storage and RAM, somewhat future-proofing the laptop, especially if you are getting yourself a low-end model.

ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Detailed Review

There has been a lot of excitement and anticipation about the new 4000-series AMD Ration processor, and the Asus TUG Gaming A15 is the first gaming laptop to be launched in the country. The TUF Gaming A15 that we received for review is powered by the Ryzen 7 4800H, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti, 16GB of DDR memory and a substantial amount of storage. Let’s see if this new machine is worthy of all the hype around.

Let’s get straight to the point. What is the main objective error about the Asus TUF Gaming A15? Damn good! The Ryzen 7 4800H and Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti are a formidable combination, pushing the most modern titles much higher than the bare minimum of 60 min. We tested several popular games running in 1080p at their high and medium preset graphics settings. The average frame rates are in the chart below. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

When testing gaming performance, we noted that the Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti was mostly the maximum in its usage, while CPU usage hovered around 60 percent. This gives us the confidence that if the Ryzen 7 4800H has enough headroom left, if it is to be paired with a high-end GPU, say like the RTX 2060, users can get even higher frame rates from this machine.

ASUS TUF GAMING A15 review completes creative work

Creative professionals who could not afford the MacBook Pro usually turned to game machines to meet the demands of their creative businesses. It is only now that OEMs are beginning to realize the potential, and as such, are specifically tuning their gaming laptops to double that of editing machines. To this end, Nvidia has also built studio drivers for its GeForce GPU to improve the performance of photo, video and 3D creation tools. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

We tested how long Adobe Lightroom Classic would have to export a batch of 50, 100, 250 and 500 RAW files shot on the Nikon D800. We compared the export time of the Asus ROG Zephyrus G (GA502) powered by last year’s Ryzen 7 3700H. The number is staggering, to say the least. The Asus TUF Gaming A15 completes practically all export operations in time. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review Benchmark Performance

We ran a number of benchmarks on the Asus TUF Gaming A15 and once again, the new AMD Ryzen 7 4800H made some significant performance leap compared to not only the previous generation of AMD processors but also Intel’s chips in this segment. Below are some benchmark results of our test. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

We’ve already been very impressed with the gaming and editing skills of the TUF Gaming A15, so at this point, the benchmark numbers are simply to hammer the point home. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review Performance

Performance is an important component of gaming machines and towards that end, Asus tries to deliver on as many parameters as possible. We get an IPS level full HD monitor with a refresh rate of 144Hz and adaptive sync. On paper, it looks great, but in practice, things are a bit different. Although the Monitor Blur Busters manages to hit its advertised 144Hz refresh rate on UFO testing, however, the response time for the panel was not the fastest we’ve seen. While this was not a problem for the campaign mode in the games we played, some gamers may find it problematic during competitive online gaming sessions. Content creators will not be very happy because the display is neither too bright nor capable of full sRGB color reproduction. We saw a peak brightness of 294 lux using our lux meter, which had good uniformity at the edges.

Color reproduction is also not the best, however, the viewing angles are the signature of the IPS display. If your editing work doesn’t include color sensitive work, then display shouldn’t be a problem, but if you’re doing color grading, performance is going to be a complete deal-breaker.

ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Battery Life

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 manages to pack a 48Whr battery in its chassis, and the new Ryzen 4000 series processor promises to be more forgiving on battery life. We tested this using several of the PCMark 10 battery benchmarks. In the gaming benchmark, the laptop lasts all 45 minutes. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

Modern office tests, which simulate battery life for everyday work, showed increased battery endurance of 2 hours and 48 minutes. We complemented PCMark’s tests with one of our own. Using a laptop unplugged for a regular workday, the TUF Gaming A15 lasted two and a half hours, which is not bad by any metric.

Asus TUF Gaming Keyboard, Track and IO

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 packs a very tried and reliable keyboard and improves one of the biggest problems with the trackpad found on the TUF series laptops of the past. The keyboard is practically the same as found on the Scar and Hero series of laptops. This means that you get 1.8mm of travel and of course, RGB. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

The keyboard has a single-zone RGB configuration, although we would have preferred at least 4-zone RGB lighting. The arrow keys are on the short side and given how close they are to each other, there can be a problem using them while gaming. On the other hand, the WASD keys are great. Asus makes the WASD keys semi-translucent which adds a nice visual touch, but a fan under the keys sucks in the cool air, keeping the keys cool. This is a huge boon for gamers as most keyboards on gaming laptops are blisteringly hot.

Moving onto the trackpad, you get a smooth surface to split your fingers, but the best thing is that Asus has finally placed separate buttons on the trackpad, which makes both of them a lot more usable. Although you may not be able to get a headshot using a sniper rifle while playing on the trackpad, it is not usable for most gaming scenarios that do not require pinpoint precision or high-speed movement.

Finally, we’ve got a good selection of ports. On the right is a singular USB 3.0 port, while on the left is an Ethernet port, a full-size HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports, and a Type-C port. Finally, gamers also get a combined headphone / microphone 3.5mm jack. It is good that Asus has closed all ports on the left side while keeping the right so that your hand can move freely while using an external mouse

Asus TUF Gaming Building and Design

The Asus TUF Gaming A15 weighs 2.3 kg and is less than an inch at its thinnest. It is not a super thin or super light machine, but it is because Asus has packed a lot of copper into this thing. There are a lot of copper pipes running above the CPU-GPU, but even the side and rear have copper blocks for better heat exchange. The rear of the laptop looks almost like a sports car, with a bright copper tableau through a black grille. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

While the base of the laptop is extremely strong, the lid is where we found ourselves a bit disappointed. There is too much flex for anyone’s liking, and Kaj also has some play. We expect that any relaxation will not be achieved over time, but the wobbling performance will not be good. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)

The Verdict

I think this is the first of many moments to impress. The Asus TUF Gaming A15 is uplifted by the AMD Ryzen 7 4800H and the Nvidia GeForce 1660Ti. The combination is perfect for those who want to elevate their gaming experience beyond the 60fps mark.

The TUF Gaming A15 also makes for a great render station, capable of exporting RAW files in many times more volume than some never seen before in this price bracket. We would not recommend using the machine for any type of colour-sensitive editing due to its less than stellar color accuracy. However, as a pure gaming machine, the Asus TUF Gaming A15 checks all the right boxes. (ASUS TUF GAMING A15 Review)
