Chicory: A Colorful Story: A moment in Chicory’s story is when the hero questions their place in it. Is it just a chance that they were given a powerful painting brush capable of restoring color in a monochromatic world? Or did they have to take on the responsibility and leave a legacy?
This question is not surprising, but it’s surprising that it comes up. Chicory’s hero doesn’t feel satisfied with the results of all their actions to date. Chicory: The Colorful Tale is an extraordinary story that you should watch unfold. It’s an engaging tale enhanced by captivating puzzles and a distinctive visual style.
Picnic’s world has grown to expect a lot of one Wielder. The world’s most skilled artists are selected from many to keep the colors alive using a magic brush. Their unique styles define a society.
This tradition has been passed down through the generations but it ends abruptly when Chicory, the latest Wielder, throws the tool aside after a catastrophic event that strips all of the land’s inhabitants of their colors.
My hero, whom I unwittingly called Pizza (every other character is appropriately named after food), leaps at the opportunity to assume the responsibility and accept the responsibility out of sheer admiration for the people who came before him, but soon starts to understand the responsibility that comes with the title of Wielder.
A Colorful Tale offers you the chance to be creative by using your magical paintbrush. You can decorate the book as you like, or use it as a coloring book. This mechanic is based on the Wielder’s responsibility to Picnic. It also helps you understand how the citizens of Picnic might have dealt with them.
Characters often ask you to return their favorite coffee shop or household to its original condition. Sometimes they are not satisfied with your results. Sometimes they will praise you for making a simple logo for a T-shirt or for reproducing a piece of art that is better looking. These two situations instill a sense that you aren’t good enough to be the Wielder or that Picnic citizens settle because there is no alternative.
Picnic allows you to paint regardless of how you feel about the reception of your artwork. You can choose from a limited range of colors that complement each other and the overall theme for the area you are painting. You can color in prominent objects on each screen with just one click.
However, you can also use broad strokes to make elegant patterns across the floor and adjacent skylines. You’ll discover more textures and brush styles as you work your way through the screen. This will encourage you to return to areas and polish them up again.
Although it is not necessary to paint in your environment, it can be a therapeutic exercise. It’s rewarding to see a scene come to life with the help of your brush. This allows you to experience Picnic in a different way than every other player.
Your bond with your brush will strengthen as you go along, unlocking new capabilities that can change the way you navigate the world. One lets your paint glow in the dark, making it possible to illuminate previously inaccessible caves. Another allows you to swim Splatoon-style through your painted surfaces to reach previously unreachable areas.
You can only navigate Picnic by using the powers you have. This gives you an opportunity to revisit previously explored areas and search for new secrets, while also allowing you to travel to new settlements. Each ability is simple to grasp and works in harmony with the others, adding new layers to your adventure at a fun pace.
Your understanding of new abilities is tested when you solve puzzles. A Colorful Tale is filled with amazing challenges that balance difficulty and satisfaction. Each chapter is themed around a different type of puzzle, which gradually increases in difficulty. This allows you to see the potential of your new ability and how it works with your other abilities.
Understanding the requirements is easy, just like the abilities. Sometimes you will need to color infauna to make it shrink or grow. Other times, you may need to push an explosive gas balloon to a rock formation to create paths. But the puzzles will be challenging. The puzzles in A Colorful Tale are not too difficult. However, they evolve from their humble beginnings to small, satisfying puzzles that can be solved on every screen.
Picnic’s large map is very detailed because the puzzles fit in the themes they are used. The way you move around these areas is integral to their design, whether you are exploring the dark caves of a bug-inhabited town or the isolated mountain peak that overlooks the entire area.
This gives the area a real character. You can fondly remember specific moments and places not only by their colors or catchy soundtrack but also by the challenges you faced to get there.
The Colorful Tale is not difficult to understand, but it evolves its puzzles from humble beginnings into smaller, more satisfying problems that can be solved on every screen.
You can also find characters in each area with their own stories or problems. This gives you many options to pause your main adventure and take a break. Chicory’s main story focuses on depression and impostor syndrome.
However, the side stories provide a well-timed break filled with funny moments, touching conversations, and quirky objectives. One of my favorite stories allowed me to play the stereotypical TV detective and solve a crime using clues found in my immediate environment. This short adventure is full of memorable one-liners and dramatic camera cuts.
There are also loads of animated characters across the story that convey tone beautifully, instead of using voice acting. This is a small, bite-sized piece that contains all the best bits from A Colorful Tales’ side stories. It gives you a reason to explore Picnic even after the credits roll. However, it also reminds you of the way A Colorful Tales’ stories constantly subvert your expectations.
The mystery is solved in a surprising manner, with the obvious suspect not being found guilty. Although it’s not subversive in nature, the way that the victim confronts the true culprit is. This leads to a touching exchange that demonstrates how our most vile traits can be exposed by striving for perfection.
This message is woven throughout A Colorful Tale’s stories. It often forces you to consider what it means to create something to be consumed by others. It questions the value of your reception, as well as the value you get from the joy you created. This is relatable regardless of how you interpret the literal examples. It doesn’t come across as condescending. Instead, it is introspective. This forced me to think about myself and enticed me to read the next chapter.
Each chapter ends with a series of boss fights that reflect the theme of each chapter. Chicory’s insecurities are confronted by a mirror image. This projecting her problems onto you is also a key element to the design of the puzzle-like fights. These scenes are soaked in dark, negative colors filters and contrast A Colorful Tale’s cheerful presentation in a striking manner.
They effectively depict the extent of the emotional traumas the characters represent. Sometimes they can feel more difficult than the rest, but this is thankfully offset by checkpoints that return you to where you were after a short pause. If you’re more interested in the final narrative than the fight to get there, the game allows you to skip boss fights completely.
A Colorful Tale’s gameplay is so fluid that it’s hard to find friction that stops you from enjoying its moving story. It’s also balanced well enough to provide an engaging adventure with outstanding puzzle mechanics and satisfying answers. Chicory: A Colourful Tale is a game that encourages self-exploration.
It often presents earnest themes that are relatable and can be difficult to connect with. It’s also a way to confront your insecurities, barriers and help you appreciate what you give out into the world. It is a powerful tale that does more than just tell the story. This makes it one of my favorite games this year.
- This is a beautifully written story that explores self-doubts and insecurities.
- There are many characters to choose from that combine well-timed humor and powerful emotional punches.
- Cathartic painting allows you to embrace the role as the Wielder while still expressing your personal style on the game’s visual style.
- These puzzles are cleverly designed to make the most of your growing list of special abilities and provide a satisfying challenge.
- Boss battles close each chapter with fascinating interpretations of the emotional strifes which preceded them. But…
- These battles can be quite challenging, and they can seem jarring.
