HP Pavilion Gaming 15 laptop has some top-of-the-line specifications and the design looks quite modern. So, will it be able to take on its competition? let’s find out.
Gaming laptops were an area where most users found it difficult to go and get to their desired final average machine. However, manufacturers are now trying to give you better specs at competitive price points that have paved new markets and make it easier for customers to soak up their gaming needs without spending their life savings.
We have seen brands aggressively in the aggressive gaming laptop segment. One such brand is HP. The company recently introduced a range of products that are meant to give a tough competition to the rest of the gaming laptop. And Shining Armor has one such Knight HP Pavilion Gaming 15 laptop. The laptop has some top-of-the-line specifications and the design looks quite modern. This starting price is Rs 70,791. We received a top-end machine for review, priced at Rs 96,952. So, will it be able to take on its competition? let’s find out.
HP Pavilion Gaming 15 Design and performance
Starting with the first design, the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 laptop has a stylish design language. The lid is made of a matte plastic with a purple HP logo. Once you open the lid, you’ll see a brushed metal finish just below the keyboard area, while the top of the keyboard has a jagged diamond design pattern for the speakers. The power button is on the top-left corner and the top-left has B&O branding.
Air vents are present under the lid and give it a beautiful edgy feel. The brand has done a good job in giving this laptop the much needed modern look and aggressive styling. Talking about ports placement, the power jack is coupled to a USB 3.1 port, an HDMI port, an RJ-45 port and a headphone jack on the left side of the laptop. The right houses two USB 3.1 ports and an SD card slot. That said, we noticed some problems with the addition of the lid, but other than that, the rest of the design is quite attractive in nature.

Coming to the display, the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 laptop is equipped with a 15.6-inch full HD LED backlit display, which has a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and also has 144ppi pixel density. The screen has an IPS anti-glare coating, which hides the shine quite effectively. The brightness of the gaming laptop is quite decent in nature and the viewing angles are also decent. However the downside here is that the company has added a 60Hz refresh rate, which in our opinion could be better. We have not reported any backlight bleeding and it covers more than 66 percent of the sRGB color gamut.
Keyboard and touchpad
The HP Pavilion gaming laptop features a full-size textured island-style keyboard with numeric keypad. The keyboard is backlit in nature, which means that you won’t have any problems playing games without ambient lighting. In our test period, we found that the typing experience on this device is quite comfortable and comfortable in nature. The keyboard offers a travel distance of 1.15 mm which in our view is quite decent. Coming to the gaming experience, you’ll enjoy it, though it takes some time to get used to it.
One thing we did not like was the size of the up and down buttons. Most of the time we pressed the wrong key, which was sometimes quite disappointing. Coming to the touchpad, it comes with Windows 10 multi-point gesture support. The performance of the trackpad was quite satisfactory in our testing and it was easy to navigate.
For performance, HP Pavilion Gaming is powered by the 15th-generation Intel Core i7-8750H (2.3GHz base frequency) and offers up to 4 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology with 9 MB of cache. It has an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB DDR5 graphics card. The laptop is supported by 8GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM with 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD + 1TB storage with 7GB RPM.
In day to day use, you will not feel any deficiency or anything. We opened about 20 tabs on Chrome and watched a few episodes on Amazon Prime Video and Netflix, the laptop’s performance was fast. However, when it comes to rendering some 3D graphics, we noticed a few minute intervals. Multitasking was liquid and smooth during our review period. However, sometimes we noticed some gaps. For example, after a long session of power usage, we tried to refresh it with Wright. At that time the home screen froze, although the rest of the work was fine. It was very strange, to be honest.

Coming into gaming performance, the device was able to play all new games and we didn’t notice notice. Games like Fornite and PUBG ran smoothly and we easily got the 60fps mark with this laptop. The thermal performance was decent as well, however when we played an extended gaming session we did see an increase in temperature. The fan sound was also particularly loud.
Coming to the battery department, the HP Pavilion Gaming 15 is equipped with a 52.5 Whr 3 cell cylindrical lithium ion polymer battery with fast charging support. In our testing, we found out that the laptop lasted about 2 to 3 hours under heavy use, while under normal use, it was able to deliver more than 4 hours of battery backup. The laptop also supports fast charging and in our testing, it is derived from 0–90 percent. In about 90 to 120 minutes.
The HP Pavilion Gaming 15 laptop comes with a stunning design, though the durability of the lid is in question. The display distributes some porous colors and the performance is satisfactory, although occasionally we encountered some lag. The keyboard and trackpad are very smooth to operate and battery life may be better. Overall, if you are thinking of buying this laptop, then you should also consider its competition.
