This story is part of I’m So Obsessed (subscribe here), our podcast featuring interviews with actors, artists, celebrities and creative types about their work, career and current obsessions.

Whether or not it was starring as Liam Dempsey Jr. within the third season of Westworld on HBO, or popping up in exhibits and movies like Newsroom and 10 Cloverfield Lane, actor and musician John Gallagher Jr. has a fairly eclectic profession. All that is bolstered by the truth that he starred within the unique Broadway productions of Spring Awakening and American Idiot, based on the album by Green Day. So it comes as no shock to see Gallagher star alongside Gillian Jacobs in the new inventive horror film Come Play.

Gallagher was my visitor on CNET’s I’m So Obsessed podcast and described Come Play as a horror movie intertwined with a household drama. Hearken to the interview beneath.

“It is mainly a movie a couple of regular blue-collar household struggling to make ends meet. I play the daddy, Marty, and Gillian Jacobs performs my spouse, Sarah,” stated Gallagher. “We’re within the means of splitting up, and we’re attempting to deal with our 8-year-old son, Oliver, who’s on the spectrum. He finds himself communing with an otherworldly presence by means of his smartphone.”

One of many issues that appealed to Gallagher in regards to the movie was how Come Play used the gadgets we now have inside attain every single day as a framework to discover isolation and alienation. Gallagher even thinks the film has echoes of the 1983 movie Poltergeist.

Poltergeist “was a movie that handled know-how, with this ghost being inside the tv that kidnaps this younger lady from her household,” stated Gallagher. “We’re nearly taking part in with that motif slightly bit right here by having it’s the younger boy. However as a substitute of the TV, it is smartphones and tablets. So it seems like a kindred spirit.”

Throughout our dialog, we talk about the movie, whether or not Liam was a robotic or not in Westworld, Gallagher’s music profession and the way 10 Cloverfield Lane bought its title.

Hearken to my complete dialog with Gallagher on Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Come Play is now out in theaters. Additionally, you’ll be able to subscribe to I’m So Obsessed on your favorite podcast app. In every episode, Connie Guglielmo and I meet up with an artist, actor or creator to study work, profession and present obsessions.
