Review of Asus ROG Flow X13: It packs a punch

Asus ROG Flow X13: Asus has been working for a long time to protect gaming laptops against body shaming. Zephyrus, a thin and lightweight gaming laptop from Asus, was launched a few years ago.

Last year, the Zephyrus G14 was introduced. It was one of the most compact gaming laptops on the market at 14 inches. The company now has a solution that will not only stop gaming laptops being called bulky and heavy but also dispel the myth of being loud and ugly by design and aesthetics. It is capable of outperforming most ultra-thin, light laptops.

This is the ROG Flow X13, Asus’ first gaming laptop featuring a 13.3-inch screen and a compact design. These laptops are equipped with Nvidia GeForce graphics. It is also powered by the AMD Ryzen 5500 series processors. It also features a large battery, up to 4K touch screen, liquid metal cooling, and a dedicated slot for PCIe express support for external graphics cards. All this in a slim and lightweight 2-in-1 package.

We don’t know how Asus managed everything in a small machine. We can’t tell you if this laptop is a tiger in a wolfs body, or if it is just another thin, light laptop with high hopes. We’ll be reviewing the Asus ROG Flow X13.

Asus ROG-Flow X13: Design & Display

Asus’ ROG laptop has a slim and lightweight chassis design. Asus is trying to reduce its aggressive aesthetics with a simpler and cleaner design. ROG FlowX13 is a significant step in this pursuit.

The Flow X13’s blacked-out design makes it a more powerful convertible laptop. It also retains its’muted gaming appeal. It has a carbon-fibre exterior texture and gives it a premium, ‘brutal’ feel as a gaming machine.

The keyboard deck is also black with thinner textured lines. Asus claims that they used a different paint job to maintain a comfortable temperature. It held the temperature for about an hour without AC, and the top and bottom of the laptop felt comfortable to hold.

This laptop was made by Asus using aluminum, magnesium, and plastic. This is the plastic’s bottom. It has the same texture pattern and design as the lid. This laptop seems to work well with the whole mix of materials. Despite being only 15.3mm thick, the chassis of Flow X13 seems very rigid. There’s no flex in the keyboard deck and display. It’s an ROG machine, and it’s constructed like one.

We like the port selection and are happy that Asus still recognizes the importance I/O in a laptop. The Flow X13 has just enough power to get you through a typical day without worrying about dongles at night.

The laptop comes with 1xUSB Type A, 1x USB Type C, an HDMI port, and a 3.5 combo jack for headphones. The left side of your laptop has a second port, which is essentially a PCIe express port and a USB Type C port to connect XG Mobile GPU.

The company will soon launch the XG Mobile GPU, an external graphics unit. To give the laptop an extra boost, the XG Mobile GPU will include an external RTX GPU card (up to RTX3080).

The 360-degree hinge is one of the most impressive implementations we have ever seen. It’s not because the hinge is smooth or holds the display at any angle or mode. It is the only convertible that has a 360-degree hinge and allows you to lift it with one hand.

Asus did not add rubber grips to the display area. The laptop slips a little when it is in tent mode. The laptop has a side-mounted power button, which doubles as the Windows Hello fingerprint scanner.

No matter what mode the laptop is in, the placement of the fingerprint scanner seems a little odd. The company does not provide a button to adjust the volume in tablet mode. You will have to use the touch-based Windows controls, which are also not convenient.

The display of the Asus Flow X13 is 13.4 inches. It is available in two resolutions, depending on the model that you choose. A FHD panel with 120Hz refresh rate or a 4K UHD panel at 60Hz.

Both panels are touch panels that support stylus input. Thankfully, Asus included one in their box. The 4K panel came in our unit and is bright, vibrant and sharp. It offers the perfect amount of peak brightness, and a great touch response. .

This display is validated by Pantone and has excellent colour accuracy. It’s great for content creation and gaming. The 16:10 aspect ratio was also a favorite of ours. It allows for more content to be displayed and does away with the black bars that can be seen when watching movies or playing games.

Asus FlowX13: Performance general

Flow X13 is equipped with a high-end AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor paired alongside Nvidia GeForce GTX1650 dedicated graphics. The Ryzen 9 5800HS processor is paired with GTX1650, 16GB RAM, and 1TB SSD.

It might seem like too many cores and threads for a 2-in-1 convertible, but most of the machines are intended for student or work use. The Ryzen 9 5800HS can handle large tasks such as editing and gaming but is quiet enough to manage day-to-day tasks without causing a hiccup.

It takes seconds to do basic tasks like opening a laptop or getting out of bed. We noticed that it takes the laptop a while (a few seconds) to get back to normal after awakening from sleep.

Everything else works perfectly. This laptop has faster storage, which makes it easy to open and close software, games, etc. The whole concept of Flow X13 is to achieve a balance between portability, performance, and portability.

Asus has achieved this balance to an extent. It is possible to make compromises, but it’s not without them. It is not without compromises, although it does not have as many as brands usually make to lower the price.

The keyboard is quiet, responsive and smooth. It is also very easy to use the keyboard on a thin laptop. Asus used a while-colour backlit laptop with Aura Sync technology. We have not seen a better White backlit laptop from Asus. The backlit is average. You will also find dedicated keys for volume, microphone and Armory Crate buttons on the keyboard.

Windows Precision Driver’s glass trackpad is excellent at tracking. It did not skip or jump during our use. This is also a perfect size for a 13 inch laptop.

This Wi-Fi card comes from Intel and was not as powerful as what we expected on a gaming computer. The Wi-Fi performance could be improved.

The audio system is another important feature of the machine. Asus has provided two speakers in the bottom of the laptop’s front. These speakers are not great. They sound clear and good. It would have been nice if they were a little louder. We tried tweaking the settings of the Dolby Atmos App that comes with our laptop, but it made no difference.

Asus included a webcam despite the thin bezels. There’s nothing fancy about this. This webcam is 720p and will do the job.

Asus ROG-Flow X13: Gaming performance and creator performance

Nvidia GTX 1650 and an AMD Ryzen 9 processor are not the best combination for gaming laptops. It is compact and strong, however. These laptops have very little breathing space and can be difficult to cool.

We used the laptop to do everything in our testing, from basic Microsoft Word tasks to editing photos and video to high-end gaming.

With its consistently high performance, the Flow X13 was almost the first ultrabook. This machine was capable of editing many photos and videos using Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop, as well as Premiere Pro. The 4K export speed and rendering speed were excellent. We were able to browse and watch other videos while doing this without any hassle.

Gaming is more challenging and the additional XG Mobile Graphics unit is a great addition. The Flow X13’s Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 1650 does a good job for the moment. We tested several games, including Cyberpunk 2077, The Division 2, Cyberpunk 2 and CoD Black Ops Cold War.

Cold War defaulted at medium-high graphics settings. It managed to reach 60fps and maintain it even after a long gaming session that lasted 8 hours. Cyberpunk 2077 and Division 2 are more challenging, but we still managed to get more than acceptable frame rates with this laptop.

What surprised us was the laptop’s thermal management. The keyboard and palm rests are significantly cooler than the top part of the laptop when playing games. It is not hard to see, but the laptop maintained an 80-degree temperature throughout the gaming session. This is really impressive.

You can still hear the fan at this point, as it kicks in at 8000 rpm. The ROG Flow 13 X13 is a solid gaming machine, even without the extra graphics unit.

Asus ROG-Flow X13: Battery Life

The Asus ROG Flow X13 claims a battery life of 18 hours, but it didn’t live up to our expectations. We only managed to get 6-7 hours out of a single battery charge even with the performance mode set to minimum brightness and silent.

The adapter supports fast charging and is 100W USB Type C PD. It charged our laptop to 70% in just 45 minutes, and then fully charged it in less than an hour and fifteen minutes.

Verdict: Asus FlowX13

Asus created a unique gaming laptop with Flow X13. It can be used as a convertible, gaming laptop, laptop for creators or a tablet. It is capable and reliable, and the price is right for the company.

The Flow X13 is more than a lightweight machine at a starting price of Rs 1,19,000.990 The Flow X13 can play games at a reasonable frame rate and offers performance almost no other laptop in this size category can match.
