The Best Gaming Laptops of 2021: These are our picks when it’s time for play. The latest gaming laptops are designed to meet the demands of gamers who want to improve their skills.
While a good gaming setup may be expensive, it is often worth the investment for gamers who are serious about gaming and have the budget.
A decent gaming laptop is more than just its speed. It doesn’t matter if you pack it with the most powerful graphics card or the most vibrant display, but it could still be slow.
You might notice a drop in gaming performance or overheat from those powerful components. You might not want to use an external mechanical keyboard with RGB backlighting per-key RGB, but the WASD keys on this system feel like mashed potatoes. There are many games that can’t be slowed down by dual cores and last-generation GTX.

This means that it is not necessary to spend a lot of money on a new laptop. If you don’t shop carefully, budget gaming can be difficult. However, we all know there is no “cheap” gaming laptop.
Battery life has always been a compromise that you have had to make. It typically lasts for around 2 hours of gaming nonstop. Battery power was not sufficient to run most CPU-intensive or GPU-intensive games. Hardcore gaming sessions would see processors slow down and screens dimming.
A laptop that feels agile when connected to the internet becomes a drain on battery power, making your epic battles a struggle for frustration.
This is changing as Nvidia, AMD, and Intel have focused on power management technology improvements. While you cannot still play for 10 hours on a single battery, there are now great gaming laptops that can last 10-hours.
Components do matter. Nvidia GeForce RTX3080 laptop graphics card is the fastest. It comes with the standard Max-Q variants. Max-Q versions are slower than full-size counterparts. This is to reduce noise and heat and make them more compact.

RTX models can also accelerate raytraced rendering and provide intelligent scaling (also known as DLSS), where it’s supported. The lower-end Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti includes Turing, the latest generation of Nvidia technology without the additional cost or power burden associated with the RT cores.
However, the Max-Q’s problem is that you must reboot in order to switch between a dedicated GPU and the original Optimus modes. This only allows the GPU to accelerate, but not draw the screen.
This means that you won’t be able to take advantage of Max-Q’s superfast refresh rates with Optimus. Why not just leave it on GPU mode? You’ll often experience poorer CPU performance and even lower graphics performance when you balance CPU and GPU usage.
Nvidia’s Max-Q architecture has been updated to support Advanced Optimus. The integrated and discrete graphics sharing, rather than switching, makes it smarter. This means that there is no need to reboot. Advanced Optimus requires a significant change in system design. Laptops that support Advanced Optimus are still scarce.
AMD’s new laptop GPUs, Radeon RX6600M, 6700M, and 6800M don’t quite reach Nvidia RTX’s speed, but the Radeon RX6800M has gotten close (in one system we have tested it with so far). Performance on average falls between the RTX 3070 or 3080.
AMD H-series AMD processors from the Ryzen 5000 series include new mobile Core i9 rivals, the eight-core/16thread Ryzen9 5900HS, and Ryzen 9 5900HX. The low-power HS was tested in the Asus ROG Flow X13.
It flew on single-core and multi-core. The higher-powered HX in Asus ROG Strix 15 inch models is comparable to Intel’s 10th gen i9-10900HK processors (I haven’t tested any 11th-gen Tiger Lake–H processors yet).
While more cores can help you choose a CPU, many games, especially older ones, don’t need more than four. This is partly why Intel continues to rely on its 14-nanometer architecture in the 10th-gen H series processors. This allows the company to increase single-core clock frequencies.
It is a far better solution than moving to smaller process technologies like Ice Lake which can support more cores with less power draw. At CES 2021, the next generation of Tiger Lake 10nm H Series was announced. We look forward to Xe discrete graphic (beyond low-end Xe Max).
The screens are another important aspect. Everybody bumped up their 1080p flagships to 360Hz. But for many gamers, it’s not necessary. 240Hz maximum should be sufficient for the few occasions when you can achieve frame rates higher than 240fps.
Many people can get by with 144Hz, but artifacts such as tearing (due to the screen refresh rate being out of sync) and frame rates becoming too high depending on the games you play as well as the brand and model of your laptop.
The flagship models have a lot more 120Hz 4K screens, both in 17- and 15-inch sizes. There are also tons of 165Hz and QHD (1440p), options. These are my favorite, as they balance higher resolution (certainly enough for a laptop screen) with more gaming-friendly refresh rates.

Best gaming value under $1,000: Dell G5 15
A budget gaming laptop is not possible. The Dell G5 15, a budget gaming laptop with great graphics and long battery life, is a fantastic deal. There are two options: a standard Intel-based model or an AMD Ryzen-based special edition.
Best midrange gaming laptop: Asus ROG Strix – G15 Advantage Edition
The $1,650 all-AMD gaming laptop from Asus delivers outstanding performance and battery life with a Ryzen 9 5900HX processor and Radeon RX6800M GPU. This is before you consider that its components and performance are far superior to the price. Even at full tilt, it runs quiet and cool.
The best gaming laptop to impress at work: Razer Blade 15 Advanced
The Advanced’s early 2021 model was available for me to test, but Razer changed processors and updated the design in just a few months. It will be available next month. There were so many changes made by Razer that you can still purchase the older model. However, I strongly recommend against it.
Although I haven’t had a chance yet to see the new design, Razer has resolved my main complaints about the original design by coating it with a fingerprint-resistant coating, improving its palm rejection, and upgrading to a 1080p camera. The chassis is also about 1mm thinner, but only for the entry RTX3060-based model.
The Core i9-11900H processor is available in the updated line (only for the 4K OLED model). It also includes all of the upgrades such as dual Thunderbolt 4 ports and PCIe Gen 4 storage. Razer is also offering the 240Hz P3Gamut QHD screen, as opposed to the 165Hz RGB model that I tested on my unit.
Razer’s minimalist style will not leave bored coworkers wondering about the games that are taking over your screen during meetings. This laptop is not cheap, so they may be a little skeptical.
Best gaming laptop overall: Razer Blade Pro 17
Go big if you want the best. There are 17-inches that are faster, but dual power bricks are my preference. It doesn’t really matter to me. You can also check out the Gigabyte Aorus 17X and Alienware Area 51m, which are mammoth systems.
The Blade Pro is fast, offers powerful gaming performance with the Intel Core i7-1075H Processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 20 series super graphics, but it doesn’t compromise its slim figure. The Blade Pro laptop is a great choice for creators. Gamers will love the Razer display with a 300Hz refresh rate.
The best balance between portability and gaming power: Asus ROG Flow X13 and XG Mobile
Asus has created an ultra-portable 13-inch two-in-one that pairs an AMD CPU with a powerful AMD GPU with an external GPU dock with a top-of-the-line Nvidia GeForce RTX3080 mobile processor.
The result is a system that can be used for work and play and outperforms larger slower gaming laptops. It’s two-in-one, so you can use an external keyboard with no restrictions. Unfortunately, it is not in stock at the moment.
The best gaming laptop for customizers: Origin PC Evo17 – S
The generic chassis can be customized with custom graphics, but the appeal of this 17-inch gaming notebook is its wealth of components. It starts at $2,200, and it’s not cheap. Although it is quite thin, you can fit in a Core i7-10770H, Nvidia RTX3080 GPU, 4K 100% Adobe RBG display, and Core i7-108070H.
